Modern family home gets a stunning makeover in Santa Monica

A family home was given a complete interior update, with modern finishes and furnishings by DISC Interiors, located in Santa Monica, California. The home was originally constructed back in 2008 by JFAK Architects and was in need of a complete overhaul, catering to the lifestyle needs of this energetic family of four. The design team got to work on creating a casual California cool vibe with rustic nuances.

All interior elements needed to be stylish yet family-friendly, with spaces that flow from one to the next. The home has extensive glazing and skylights, so the designers opted to bring in a color scheme that reflected its surrounding environment. Hues were inspired by the greens and browns of nature and the blues of the Pacific Ocean. White walls serve as a backdrop to the neutral color scheme with pops of color integrated throughout.

To infuse visual interest into the neutral color scheme, the designers layered textures and materials. They went with a more masculine approach, relying heavily on texture and injecting more color than their usual design approach. The homeowners have a hippie yet sophisticated design sense, so the designers layered various vintage rugs over the hardwood flooring.

This allowed for the needed texture and visual flair the designers were seeking to create. When creating a design scheme, their approach is simple: textured linens, leather, a sprinkling of pattern and velvets are applied in every space. The focal point of the living room is the central fireplace with a built-in bookshelf. The bookshelf allows plenty of space to decorate with personal items. The nooks are lined with grasscloth to add texture and visual appeal.

What We Love: The furnishings in the living room were designed to be more open to the kitchen, encouraging conversation and fluidity between the spaces. This family home encourages a casual atmosphere with fantastic spaces to live and entertain. We love all of the small details, the patterned and textured area rugs, fabulous light fixtures and plush fabrics. Plenty of eye candy in this California pad.
