The design team at Jamie Bush & Co. took a five-story beach house in Malibu, California from dark and dreary with awkwardly unusable spaces to a bright and airy home full of life. The homeowners wanted their spaces to feel like an art gallery, using their crisp white walls as a backdrop to highlight their colorful works of art. To completely transform the interiors, walls needed to be removed to open spaces up to enable better views through walls of floor-to-ceiling glass. In order not to detract from these fabulous ocean views, the designers selected a neutral color palette, creating a feeling of calm and serenity. It was imperative to the designers to create harmony in the design scheme, one way this done was through material elements. A sandy hued limestone flooring travels from the front gate, up the entryway steps and straight through to the balconies facing the ocean. Other elements includes the work of notable artist Carolyn Cole, her mixed media art adds an array of captivating beauty, while modern glass pieces offer bright bursts of color throughout the interiors.
The entryway into the home is bright and airy with soaring ceilings and a curvaceous staircase winding its way up to other levels of the home. Spherical light fixtures are suspended from the ceiling at varying lengths, making your eyes travel upwards. Steps down from the entrance reveals an open living room and with sliding glass doors that gives way to a balcony overlooking the turquoise-blue of the glistening ocean. Sitting on the private patio, enjoying a glass of wine or an iced tea and listening to the waves crashing would be heavenly… don’t you think?
Glass railings provides transparency, helping to bring in natural light and expand the views out to the ocean from inside the home. Comfortable seating makes for a quiet, relaxing space to enjoy beach life.
What We Love: Let’s start with the fact that this is a beach house, shall we? Being right on the beach with expansive views of the ocean from almost every room is a major plus. Bright and airy spaces with plenty of natural light creates an atmosphere conducive to happiness… coupled with the sights and sounds of the ocean, sounds like a great place to have your home office! Would you be productive? If you could build your dream home anywhere, would it be next to the ocean? Let us know why or why not in the comments below!
