Mid-century inspired home nestled in scenic foothills of the Sierra Madre

This mid-century modern home was designed by Jamie Bush & Co. who worked alongside Osborn Architects to create this stunning property, nestled in the foothills of La Cañada, California. The glass, steel, redwood and stone residence features 5,000 square feet of sumptuous living space. For the design, the architects based it on its mid-century predecessor, which was in dire condition and fell apart over time.

The homeowners loved the original house so much that they spent six years paying homage to the original, yet with substantial aesthetic and technological improvements. The owners are a middle-aged couple who have two high school aged boys, wishing to have their home express a warm, eclectic modernism. One that was rich yet unfussy, weighed of the earth, yet playful and surprising.

Jamie Bush & Co. was responsible for the interior architecture of this project – design and specifications of the kitchen, bathrooms, casework, material and color palette selections, etc. — in addition to the furnishings throughout. The central focus was to create a home that’s built from the outside in. This meant that the material selections, color palette and configuration of the planes of this home, along with the detailing, were selected to work on the exterior first and then pulled inside the house.

This was done in order to blur the lines between indoors and out, in quintessential California style. Slate flooring extends to both the front and backyard patios, while redwood siding runs continuously on all vertical surfaces — both on the interior and exterior. A painted steel structure and white ceilings also take part in this endeavor.

The furnishings and light fixtures are a mixture of custom-designed pieces, select mid-century vintage finds, contemporary furnishings and ethnic pieces from Asia, Indonesian and Peru. The main objective for the interior decoration of this home was to design a house that expressed a heavy hand in a highly textured, natural and neutral color and materials palette. It was necessary that the decor reflect as an extension of the architecture of the house, with select and strategic pops of color throughout, to create a sense of surprise.
