A modern lake house was constructed to maximize its views of Lake Washington an Mt. Ranier by SkB Architects in collaboration with Dyna Contracting, located on Mercer Island, Washington. A relaxing oasis from city life, the home encompasses 6,500 square feet of living space, with a urban beach house aesthetic. There were two existing homes on the site when the new homeowner’s purchased the property, which were demolished and a brand new structure was nestled into the landscape. The scope of the project entailed creating clean-lined spaces for entertaining and the enjoyment of everyday living. The exterior facade is in the shape of a boomerang to help give its inhabitants privacy from neighboring homes and orient it towards the majestic vistas of Mount Rainier. On the interiors you will find concrete walls and floors with radiant heat along with exposed Douglas fir beams and ceilings, which creates a welcoming modern, open plan layout. A muted color palette was selected to correspond with the tones from the surrounding surface structures. The finished result is a home elegantly tucked away on the shores of the lake, offering all the luxuries its new homeowners could possibly dream of.
The Ipe deck is connected to an expansive lawn from a series of concrete steps, allowing the homeowner’s boys the perfect space to enjoy outdoor activities and get fresh air.

The home is practically on top of the lake thanks to a solid foundation and an expansive Ipe deck the wraps around the home’s main living area. Loewen sliding doors open up to capture the lakeside views, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. Large overhangs incorporate space heaters that enables the homeowners to take advantage of this outdoor living space all year round, rain or shine. The blackened steel fireplace surround was fabricated by Dyna Contracting’s metal shop, while a powder coated exterior chimney cap completes the contemporary aesthetic.
Bursts of vibrant color can be seen throughout the interiors, from artwork, area rugs and accent pillows, while hues from outside getting pulled in through expansive floor-to-ceiling glass that wraps around the living, dining room and kitchen.
What We Love: The lakeside setting is very peaceful and relaxing with the amazing connection between the interior and exterior living environments, all the while creating a great experience. This would be the idyllic retreat to spend your summers away from the hustle and bustle of city life. What do you think, do you find this home a peaceful respite?
Upstairs there are three bedrooms, all of which offers captivating views of the lake. The master bedroom suite showcases two walk-in closets, a steam shower and private sleeping quarters, separated by a custom built sliding door comprised of Douglas Fir.
