Modern Mercer Island home showcases vivacious color palette

This property originally began as a early 90’s eyesore until interior designer Kimberlee Marie completely transformed it into a midcentury modern masterpiece on Mercer Island, Washington. Designed for an upbeat, active young family, the residence showcases spacious, open plan rooms, plenty of natural light and sweeping views over Lake Washington. While the 5,500 square foot home was structurally sound, it was in need of some major renovations that included two living rooms, the kitchen, a study, playroom, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The homeowners wanted a clean and simple yet sophisticated aesthetic, with bold, vibrant hues that don’t overwhelm the space. The key was to balance colors, textures and patterns throughout the interiors. Beginning with a neutral color palette, splashes of color were infused throughout, while texture and visual interest were added through wall coverings, fabrics and artworks. The finished result is an open and airy home that is warm and welcoming.

Classic furniture selections in the formal living room creates a nice air of sophistication, with white leather Barcelona chairs paired with a bright blue sofa inspired by the blue of the lake through the windows. In keeping with the openness of the expansive walls of glass, an acrylic coffee table has been place in the center of the furniture grouping.

The study was once a dark space with a more serious tone and has now been given a whole new life with a more cheery and bright aesthetic. A bright coral shade was painted over the dark brown on the built-in bookcase, while a roman shade was custom designed from Jonathan Adler fabric.

The original master bedroom was very lackluster, without any kind of romantic atmosphere or serene oasis. The designer used the surrounding outdoor environment of the lake and trees as color inspiration, while gold accents were used to infuse elegance into the space.

The master bathroom was originally more closed off, with a marble tub surround, glass block shower and wall covering in a pink hue. The new look is clean and sophisticated, open and airy…. more like a heavenly spa oasis. A freestanding bath allows more space, which enabled a vanity to be constructed where there originally was not one. The artwork displayed on the wall holds a special meaning to the homeowners of a trip they once took together to Yellowstone National Park.

This powder bathroom is located just off the entryway and was originally just an unattractive space. The designer decided to spice it up with some color, creating a bold statement by applying Cole & Son’s Circus wall paper. Their guests will surely enjoy this playfully updated space the next time they come to visit!
