Marie Flanigan Interiors has beautifully reimagined a 1907 farmhouse in Brenham, Texas, blending modern furnishings with the traditional structure to maintain a sense of history. The designer helped the family create their dream farmhouse, celebrating a slower pace of living with a sophisticated touch. The historic home is nestled into a hillside, with sweeping views over 90 acres and three lakes, offering the homeowners a sense of peace and tranquility.
Moving away from the hustle and bustle of city life and residing in the countryside has allowed the family to disconnect from technology and connect more with nature. Their historic home was handsome but was in major need of a complete overhaul. Most of the original beaded board and shiplap were preserved, while the damaged sections were refinished. Contemporary hardware was replaced with antique brass versions.
Strong, impactful materials that reflect the earthy aspects of rural life and farming—including raw woods, natural stone slabs, and steel—give this dwelling an authentic country feel, which is unexpected in a modern farmhouse. To maintain visual interest in the predominantly white house, the designer integrated bold colors and textures, including dark beams, shiny metals, and accents of rich navy.
To balance the old with the new, the designer adorned the home with relaxed upholstery fabrics, such as simple cotton and natural linens in subdued, mainly solid colors, along with an occasional stripe. This softened the bold lines of contemporary pieces and helped them integrate into the historic adobe.
The original house’s walls and ceilings were clad with wood, but they felt dark and dated. To create a bright and airy atmosphere in the living spaces, the ceilings in most rooms were preserved, while the walls were painted a soft off-white to contrast, creating a subtly vintage aesthetic.
The interior color palette primarily consists of neutral tones infused with soft beiges, taupes, blacks, grays, and browns, drawing inspiration from the surrounding countryside. Accents of color, like blues, greens, and jewel tones, enhance visual interest while creating a sense of harmony throughout the living spaces.
What We Love: This 1907 farmhouse in Texas was completely transformed to meet the lifestyle needs of a family that wanted a more relaxed pace of life. The designer did a fabulous job of preserving historical details while completely modernizing the home for functionality and comfort. We love so many of the design features in this home, especially in the kitchen, with its copper pots hanging in the window, exquisite pendant lights over the island, and large island with open shelves for easy access to dishware when cooking.
