This stylish contemporary dwelling was designed by DHD Architecture in collaboration with interiors studio Eve Robinson Associates. The single family home is located in the Carnegie Hill neighborhood on the section of Fifth Avenue, New York known as Museum Mile. The structure originally served as a carriage house in 1915, designed by the firm of Delano & Aldrich for William and Dorothy Straight. The mansion featured a neo-Georgian style and continued as a residence until 1952.

It was then sold to the Audubon Society who used it as their corporate headquarters. In 1973, the building was then purchased by the International Center of Photography. The company owned it for 27 years before selling it to hedge fund founder Bruce Kovner for $17.5 million, for use as his personal residence. The new owner was not looking for a home, but when it came on the market, he was intrigued by its extraordinary architectural beauty.

There was virtually no original detail when the architect’s begun renovation to this relatively humble structure, which was reconfigured to cater to the homeowner’s needs. To convert it to a single family residence, interior floor plates were carved away to form two elegant double volume spaces. The front facade was retrofitted to express the grandness of the new interior.

An exquisite new garden at the back of the property was created by the demolition of an overbuilt addition. The entire rear facade of this spectacular structure was removed and replaced, while a full floor was added to the roof and a newly configured stair core incorporated an elevator.
