This modern hillside dwelling was designed by Lake Flato Architects, positioned on a steeply sloping site with magnificent views overlooking downtown Austin, Texas. The concept for this project was centered on the homeowner’s wish to have a “right-sized”, sustainably designed home with an indoor-outdoor connection.
The architects designed all spaces of the home to flow into the landscapes, with spacious porches, gardens and outdoor living zones. The upper level is terraced right into the hillside, which encompasses the master bedroom retreat and main living zones. On the lower children’s wing, a green roof offers an expansive main-level courtyard—preserving a grouping of heritage live oak trees.
The exterior facade of the dwelling is clad in large blocks of cut Lueders limestone. It also forms thick garden walls with spaces that invite cross-ventilation breezes.
What We Love: This hillside dwelling offers a bright and airy floorplan thanks to expansive windows that connects the homeowners with nature. From the moment of entry through a pivoting doorway, you are welcomed inside this brilliantly designed structure. The surrounding landscape is very peaceful and tranquil and the views over the downtown area are striking. We think this would be one fabulous place to call home… Readers, would you agree? Is there anything in the design of this residence that you could envision that would enhance the architecture? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
