McElroy Architecture has reimagined this mountain cabin getaway nestled in the heart of the Sierra Nevadas, just inside the Stanislaus National Forest in Arnold, California. This cozy cabin is an idyllic respite that allows you to disconnect and unwind under the towering trees, breathe in the fresh mountain air, or hike the Arnold Rim Trail right from the backyard. Built in the early 1960s, most finishes and interior spaces remained unchanged in this 800-square-foot cabin.
When the owners acquired this two-bedroom, one-bathroom ‘diamond in the rough,’ it needed a significant overhaul, which took four years to complete. Throughout the renovation, they were meticulous with every detail, ensuring that the mountain cabin charm and laid-back summer camp vibe were preserved. NEED TO KNOW: Shady Pines Cabin is available as a rental cabin on Airbnb!
The scope of this remodel project entailed opening up most of the walls, rebuilding the decks, installing new windows and doors, adding local pine wood floors, new lighting, new tile, poured concrete counters, and a fresh coat of paint. Most of the original pieces, from the medicine cabinet to the fireplace mantle, were retained. The result is a cozy alpine-modern space, which was finished in time to shelter in place during the 2020 pandemic.
