This contemporary family home was designed by Charles Cunniffe Architects in collaboration with Ownby Design, located in Phoenix, Arizona. This brand new residence sits in place of the homeowner’s 1950’s era home, that they had resided in for the past 16 years. After raising their family here, they were looking for a fresh start. The owner’s desired a home that better reflected their current lifestyle needs.
They were looking for a design style that was more streamlined and that would better connect with the outdoors. With expansive walls of glazing integrated into the stone, steel and cedar structure, the architects were able to increase daylight and help to blur indoor-outdoor boundaries. The aesthetic is clean lines, low-maintenance materials and an uncluttered appeal with a warm ambiance.
When designing the new home, it was important to position it on the site to have minimal impact on the mature grove of mesquite trees residing on the property. The trees were utilized to act as shade from the sun for the new outdoor living area. The layout features an open layout that is contemporary and organized, consisting of three distinct masses. They are unified by a central living space as well as an outdoor courtyard.
The end result is a home showcasing a series of open living spaces that visually and physically flow together. The new plan allows for entertaining guests, appropriately scaled for family living. The plan was based on maximizing daylight and creating a link between indoors and out.
