This contemporary hillside home appears to float above its site in La Jolla, an the upscale beachside community of San Diego, California, designed byย Safdie Rabines Architects. The architects custom designed this residence to step down the slope, creating beautiful outdoor terraces to help maximize the ocean vistas. The upper level consists of the main living spaces, which includes an open plan living and dining room and kitchen as well as the master bedroom suite. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows brings in natural light and frames views of the ocean in the distance. Entrance into the home is through uppermost level, where large skylights also helps to illuminate the interiors. A simple rectangular footprint is sliced at an angle by a wall of retractable sliding glass panels. This helps to create a seamless connection between indoors and the feeling of an open air pavilion. The lower level encompasses the family room and additional bedrooms.

Since the majority of the glazing faces the ocean side, the passerby from the street cannot look into the home, allowing the homeowners complete privacy.

The spacious kitchen provides extensive built-in cabinetry for storage and a lengthy fifteen-foot long island with casual seating. Quartz countertops compliment the walnut veneer cabinets andย marble backsplash behind the cooktop. The architects specified very few materials in this home so as not to detract from the unobstructed ocean views.
