This charming country cottage in Wayzata, Minnesota, a lakeside suburb of Minneapolis, underwent an addition by Pillar Homes, along with a full-scale landscape remodel by Mom’s Design Build. With two young, active boys playing lacrosse and basketball, these homeowners were determined to build an addition to their detached garage to accommodate their active family.
The remodeling plans began by envisioning a sport court connected to the garage and evolved to include a bonus room above and a connecting hallway to the existing home on the second floor, allowing for easy access.
After using the homeowners’ property effectively to build an attractive addition specific to the dreams of the homeowners, the family can now enjoy a spacious bonus room with a bathroom, sleeping loft, T.V. theater area, and connecting hallway to the home, while providing an indoor sport court for the boys to practice for the big game year-round.

What We Love About This Home
We love how this country cottage balances active family life with genuine charm, an indoor sport court, and a sleeping loft for the boys, all just steps away from a private garden oasis the homeowner calls her own. The landscape transformation by Mom’s Design Build is particularly impressive, turning a sun-deprived, cedar-lined front yard into a layered cottage garden full of alliums, hydrangeas, and lighted brick paths. From the copper-topped cupola with its golden retriever weather vane to the coastal-inspired bonus room above the garage, every detail feels both purposeful and personal.

Charming Country Cottage Landscape

Mom’s Design Build was commissioned to create this charming country cottage landscape in the heart of posh Wayzata. The landscape architect’s bold plan called for removing a row of failing cedars and creating an enchanting garden in the now sunny front yard. The plan would bring sense to the home’s complex elevation, which resulted from joining the main house and carriage house.
The goal was to make it easier to find the front entrance and reclaim the space for a private garden featuring improved paving, classic architectural elements, dog security, and more manageable maintenance.

The busy radiologist now calls the curbside swath ”my private oasis,” away from the backyard where her sons practice lacrosse for hours, and the dog walker visits daily with up to 15 charges in tow. In fact, she says a psychologist friend often joins her in the garden because they both find it so peaceful. “The landscaping is simply gorgeous, tranquil,” she observed.

A gated arbor and shrub-lined clay paver walk directs visitors to the main entry while establishing public/private boundaries. The new, lighted path from the front entry to the carriage house is easier to walk and maintain than the former stepping stones.

Garden Highlights
- New gates and enhanced fencing keep dogs in the yard.
- Flower beds and window boxes are fitted with automatic irrigation.
- Hardy plants in amended soil meet the owner’s “something I won’t kill” requirement.
- Despite the region’s declining bee population, the Allium beds teem with reportedly well-behaved pollinators.
- Flowing planting beds, white fencing, and formal paths create a colorful country garden.
