Kennebunk River Architects, in collaboration with Conforte Builders, has designed this stunning midcentury modern-inspired lake house in the woods of western Maine. Created as a full-time residence, the owners were transitioning from an oceanfront property to this idyllic woodsy setting. They desired a 2,756-square-foot house with mono-pitched roofs (inspired by the homeowners living abroad in Australia), casement/ picture windows without grills, and natural clapboard siding.
Another unique feature of the house was their desire only to have one bedroom suite in the main house. The other two guest en-suites and bunk room are located in a separate guest house, which offers 1,486 square feet of living space. Separation and privacy were key elements in the design of this woodland haven. Functional spaces were arranged on the first floor of the main house to take advantage of the views of the pond in addition to all of the natural light.

What We Love: This warm and inviting lake house in Maine offers a thoughtful design concept, with smaller structures connected via a boardwalk. This allows the owners to reside in the main house and have an ancillary structure to host their visiting kids, maintaining a manageable scale for their primary residence. We love the cozy screen porch that can be used throughout most of the year. This light-filled space is conveniently situated just off the kitchen, an idyllic respite to spend quality time with guests.

Living spaces were designed to be cozy and warm with areas of sloped ceiling which adds excitement to the spaces.
Above: The Great Room features a large stone-clad fireplace which becomes a central focal point in the space.
Above: The only space on the second floor of the main house is the library and supporting bathroom. The Library enjoys views in multiple directions and has a gas fireplace and a sloped ceiling which brings in abundant natural light throughout the day.
Above: The dog bath is especially useful during the muddy season. The floor is composed of slate, concrete, and pebbled tile. Radiant heat flooring helps to dry mucky boots and dog paws.
The guest house features a common living room with a TV viewing area and bar along with the two guest en-suites on the first floor. The second floor contains a large bunk room and its own full bath. The two structures relate to each other with similar materials, roof lines, and detail.
