MA Studios renovated this historic vacation cabin, originally built in 1904, by reexamining its footprint and either adding to or reconfiguring it, situated in Grand Lake, Colorado. The owners of this vacation lake home are a young family with generational ties to Grand Lake.
They wanted to make full use of their investment, which meant modernizing and winterizing this formerly summer-only cabin while preserving its rich historic character. The project included demolishing an old, inadequate garage to make way for a functional double garage with new above-garage living quarters, including a gathering space, a bunkroom, and an additional bedroom.

The main goal was to preserve the incredible historic quality of this Grand Lake slab-bark-style home, indicative of the original Adirondack-style camps prevalent in the Northeast U.S. This style reached the Grand Lake area in this early period of settlement.
What We Love About This Home
This lake cabin in Colorado provides its inhabitants with a beautifully preserved slice of history, thanks to the architects’ sensitive renovation of the 1904 structure. Modern upgrades, such as winterization and expanded living quarters, make it a functional year-round retreat for the young family with deep roots in Grand Lake. The result is a thoughtful blend of Adirondack-style character and contemporary livability, creating a peaceful family refuge on the lake.
