Empty nester home gets transformed in the breathtaking Wasatch Mountains

JLF Architects and Big-D Signature have completely transformed a 1980s-era log home for an empty nester couple in the breathtaking Wasatch Mountains of Park City, Utah. The original home had cavernous spaces, orangey wood tones, massive log columns and beams, and dated river rock that needed right-sizing and modernizing to meet the lifestyle needs of its new inhabitants.

The project team was challenged to preserve the original footprint yet reduce the scale of the home without compromising its structural integrity. The home underwent a complete transformation, with the inclusion of adding walls to separate the expansive main-level rooms to make them feel more intimate, create dedicated living spaces, and visually lower the soaring ceiling height of the living room.

This mountain modern update meant replacing the original round log beams with vaulted steel trusses layered over an earthy-gray-stained reclaimed plank ceiling. The fireplace was given a facelift that included replacing the cumbersome original river rocks with smoothly contained native moss rock, making an organic statement that references the surrounding nature.

What We Love: This mountain home was beautifully transformed to meet the lifestyle needs of an empty nester couple. The light and airy living spaces feel warm and inviting, especially in the living room, where a Montana moss rock fireplace provides an exquisite focal point. Large windows throughout the home frame breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountain Range, further enhancing the serene and cozy ambiance. Overall, we think the architects did a fabulous job updating this home into a stylish and comfortable sanctuary.

I can only imagine what a massive undertaking this renovation was, as a previous owner of a huge log home. Magnificent! Courageous use of plum!
