This stunning reclaimed timber-clad house was created by Dennis E. Zirbel Architect along with JJH Interior Design, set in Lahontan, a community in the Martis Valley area of Truckee, California. Encompassing 3,150 square feet of living space this two-story dwelling has four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms.
This is the personal family home of Mark Neave, owner of Truckee-based NSM Construction. The authenticity of materials throughout this dwelling is part of what gives it easy livability. Upon approach to the front door, one is greeted by a beat-up framing hammer that’s been repurposed into a door knocker, a nod to this home’s bespoke character. The windows throughout this home are by Sierra Pacific.

Heavily textured native basalt, reclaimed wood siding, and gnarly, scabrous timber cladding on the exterior introduce a strong material presence seldom experienced beyond historic structures. This rich texture extends past the sheltered entry area, through the glass-panel front door, and to the most minute interior detailing.
Custom metalwork crafted by Truckee’s Mountain Forge is found throughout the home, sufficiently amping up the rustic character. This includes hammered steel wall hooks in the mudroom (suspended against a heated board-form concrete wall to aid in the drying of soggy ski parkas), a metal framework for custom light fixtures (housing canning jars or beer growlers as lamp globes), and a one-of-a-kind stair rail.
Above: In the living room, the sofas are made by Cisco Brothers 84″ and 96″ in length. An Xtrordinair wood-burning fireplace is the focal point of this inviting space. The ceilings throughout this home are Redwood–reclaimed wine barrels from the turn of the century. The doors are “Craftsman in Wood” solid 2 1⁄4 inch Premium Knotty Alder doors. The Bi-fold doors are by “AG Millworks”.
What We Love: Beautiful rustic details can be found throughout this timber-clad house. It was constructed using reclaimed materials, where highlights include a live green roof that covers the garage and surrounds the owner’s bedroom. Thoughtfully crafted design features can be found throughout both the interior and exterior of this dwelling. Overall, we are loving this warm and inviting home with an idyllic setting in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
