This shingle-style lake house was designed for an active family by Royal Oaks Design in collaboration with Lecy Bros Home Builders, located in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The owner’s coastal New England roots inspired the “Nantucket” style design of this dwelling. With a background in interior design, the owner’s vision influenced the overall design.
Vintage coastal style grounds this modern open floor plan, devised for a busy family with three active children. The main focus was the kitchen and butler’s pantry, which is tucked behind it. There are two access points in the kitchen, one of which is connected to the garage entry and mudroom and the other connects to the open living area.
The residence is positioned on a pie-shaped property that borders a lake, where several living spaces enjoy breathtaking lake views. On the second level, the main bedroom suite and two of the three bedrooms, along with the playroom overlook the lake.

Beautiful details can be found throughout the interiors, with thoughtful material and finish selections. Large windows flood the interiors with natural light while capturing breathtaking views of the lake. Overall, we are loving the casual, relaxed feel of this family-friendly abode.

Subtle touches delineate living spaces, such as a wood ceiling in the great room and a brick floor in the informal dining room — making it appear like a later addition to a vintage home. Each space has walls of glazing overlooking the lake.

One can even catch a glimpse of the lake from the lower level, where the property’s slope enables a corner wall of windows above grade. The windows flood this lower level with natural light, which has been designed for lounging and recreation, featuring built-in wine storage and a sport court.
A last-minute inspiration resulted in this amazing hockey rink in the bonus room above the garage.
With neighborhood height restrictions presenting a challenge to the architecture, this home was designed to be one-and-a-half stories, with the upper level being tucked directly under the roof. The traditional gable dormers extend to the front wall of this dwelling, creating the appearance of a two-story home while providing an abundance of height to the upstairs living spaces. The result is a modified Cape Cod that perfectly captures the essence of coastal New England architecture.
