Gorgeous transformation of historical colonial style home in New England

traditional-home-exterior

This gorgeous historical colonial style home was given a complete overhaul by LDa Architecture, located in Brookline, Massachusetts. Constructed in the early 1900s, the new owners of this home were only the second family to ever own it. Their goal was to historically preserve the structure, along with making some much-needed renovations that would reflect their desire for contemporary living.

Interior changes and additions created a larger footprint, while the classic front facade and historic details were maintained. The architects transformed the garden side of this dwelling with a modern insertion that would embrace openness, views and natural light.

Project Team: Architect: LDa Architecture & Interiors | Interior Design: Nina Farmer Interiors | Builder: Wellen Construction Landscape Architect: Matthew Cunningham Landscape Design

The expanded rear of the home showcases magnificent views of a local park and the Boston city skyline beyond while adding an abundance of natural light. Added rooms include an enlarged and relocated kitchen, breakfast area, family room and patio, and a new master bedroom suite on the second floor, with a new garage added on the west side of the home.

A new mudroom, rear staircase, and elevator enable access to all four levels, as special attention was given to barrier-free design for aging grandparents who frequently visit. The basement level was finished and expanded to include a new media and crafts room, golf simulator, and an exercise room.

Exterior improvements include new windows, shutters, gutters, roof, and stucco. The transformed landscape features a new rear stone patio and lower play yard, and a new overall planting and lighting scheme. Interior layout and finishes were changed to improve flow and add elegance and sophistication while staying true to the historic fabric.

The unusual entry, staircase, and columned entry hall were preserved along with the original living room with its period molding and fireplace. The resulting renovation of this 10,625 square foot abode fully blends into the rich architectural history of the neighborhood, building upon the past, but looking towards the future.

What We Love: This historical colonial style home is beautifully renovated and preserved to offer an elegant and timeless aesthetic. Playing up the architectural details throughout the interiors, there is now a fresh and contemporary vibe. Reconfiguring living spaces and adding onto the existing structure helped to flood the interiors with natural light while taking advantage of this home’s stunning outdoor setting.
