Designed by Wade Weissmann Architecture to maximize the lake views on the property, this shingle style home is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Although the architects integrated an abundance of windows into the design, they also were mindful of allowing for as much privacy as possible with regard to the neighboring homes. The homeowners wished to incorporate elements of the craftsman style into the design of their home, yet they also wanted to maintain a traditionally “utilitarian” feel — which can be seen in other midwest lake homes constructed within the last hundred years.

To take advantage of the northern facing views, the architects designed the home to have a relatively narrow floor plan. This enabled the southern light to bathe all interior living spaces with natural light. Additionally, the dwelling was designed to have winged ends that angle outwards. This helped to create a certain amount of privacy within the home’s courtyard, bestowing each of the rooms within those angled ends a dual view of the lake.
To capitalize on the utilitarian aspect of the home, the architects kept the overall detailing of this home fairly simple and devoid of unnecessary embellishment. Deep overhangs were integrated into the design to allow for windows to be left open during inclement weather, while long roof forms were designed to enable snow to ‘shed off’ during the winter months. Lastly, some structural elements of this dwelling were left exposed, helping contribute to the down-to-earth, utilitarian aesthetic.
