This stunning mountain home was designed by Reid Smith Architects in collaboration with Hunter and Company Interior Design, located in Big Sky, Montana’s Yellowstone Club. This home was designed as a vacation retreat to entertain three generations. An all season getaway to be enjoyed for the skiing in the winter and golf and tennis during the summer months. The homeowners have five children and six grandchildren, with more on the way. They wanted this to be a magical place where they could all spend quality family time together.
Nestled on a ridgeline, this mountain retreat offers breathtaking views of the rugged mountains and mature trees that surrounds it. On the interiors, this is not a regular lodge style home, instead it was designed to be whimsical and fun. The wish list required there to be plenty of play spaces for the family to interact. This included a home theater, kid’s playroom, recreation room and an exercise room. There also needed to be five bedroom suites, one for each family and their children. A pair of bunkrooms with their own bathrooms would adjoin to the suites.
From the architects: “A mix of log and timber with a clean, simple, axial floor plan and no shortage of stone create this beautiful mountain retreat perched atop a mountain ridge with views second to none. The site is steep and proved to be quite a challenge for ski in/ski out access. This lead to the design of an exciting sequence of events from the ski room (ascending 31 feet) up an elevator tower and across a sky bridge into the lower level of the house. This is just one of the stimulating features of this residence.”
Another key feature to the design of this home, an observation tower with a wraparound deck. It offers panoramic views of snow-capped mountains.

Interesting Fact: This mountain retreat was designed with some sustainable features. This includes an extensive use of recycled barn wood, reclaimed timbers and geothermal heating/cooling systems.

Above: A daybed makes you feel as if you are suspended in the air. This is the ski bridge, where the elevator will take you down the hillside, 31 feet to the ski room. From there, you have direct access to the ski slopes.

Above: The vision for this ski-in/ski-out home was to have a place for the family to come in after skiing to take off their gear. They could then commune to the steam shower or hot tub to relax and get warmed up. Then they would get cleaned up before having an enjoyable family dinner. There are plenty of built-ins to store winter gear— and a hot chocolate machine!
