This coastal farmhouse retreat was reimagined by Kennebunk River Architects together with e4 Interior Design, located in Kennebunkport, Maine. The original turn-of-the-century farmhouse had several modern upgrades over the years, however, it was spatially inadequate for the current owners.

To address the shortcomings of the house, the project team was tasked with designing a new addition consisting of 3,500 square feet. The addition was comprised of an updated large kitchen, dining, and living space, along with a large screen porch on the main level. The upper level of this new addition accommodates a new owner’s bedroom suite, guest room, new bathrooms, and laundry.

An existing attached barn was taken down, piece by piece to be thoughtfully repurposed to create a large addition to this antique, vacation home. The flooring, beams, and wood countertops were reclaimed and installed to feel like the new spaces have always been a part of the 1800s home.

Aesthetically the new addition and rebuilt barn blend seamlessly with the original main house which remains the focal point.

This coastal farmhouse is perfect for entertaining and throughout the summer it is often full of activity, friends, and family.

What We Love: This coastal farmhouse in Maine was updated to provide its new owners with more space for entertaining family and friends. The new interiors are light and airy and completely modernized with coastal accents throughout. We love how the project team dismantled the existing barn on the site and had it rebuilt, reclaiming many of its original elements. Overall, we think this would be an idyllic escape to enjoy a relaxed farmhouse vibe by the sea.
