Urban Design Associates has created this spectacular southwest-style house with breathtaking desert views in Scottsdale, Arizona. Faced with the challenge of integrating the extraordinary desert mountain views along with a sizable wash running through the site, the only design solution was to split the house.

The architects ingeniously connected the garages and guest house to the main house by constructing a bridge over the wash. This southwest-style home is adorned with a traditional adobe block, harmonizing with the warmth of the desert surroundings.

Above: Function meets statement piece. This custom metal shade structure not only keeps the patio cooled off but also brings a unique design element to elevate this outdoor space.

In order to embrace the stunning mountain views at the rear, they elevated the finished floor at the back and nestled the front into the hillside. This residence was thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, anchored firmly by natural adobe masonry walls and columns that seamlessly merged with the terrain.

The choice to incorporate exposed and plastered adobe masonry was a collaborative decision between the architect and the homeowner. It maintained the southwest style of the house and evoked the warmth of the desert environment.

Native materials were selected to harmonize with the CMU construction, mirroring the natural color and texture of the surrounding landscape. The continuity of exposed adobe walls throughout the house bridged the gap between indoor and outdoor living.

This residence went through the “green” building permit submittal process.  The adobe used was a zero-waste, fully recyclable, local material.  It has a low embodied energy to produce and has a long life cycle as it is rot, termite, and fire-resistant.  Solar panels covered all flat roof areas, concealed with parapet walls.

What We Love: This Southwest-style house provides an inviting atmosphere to enjoy Arizona desert living. There are so many beautiful details in this home, from the wood beams on the ceiling to the adobe walls that provide a sense of warmth. The indoor-outdoor connection is superb and the enviable mountain views throughout this home are what make desert living desirable.
