The program for this mountain lodge-style vacation house designed by Citizen Design in Steamboat Springs, Colorado revolved around family, fun, and relaxation. Created to be a getaway for year-round activities, the goal was to create spaces to enjoy outdoor living in the summer months and indoor living in the winter.
A strong visual connection from the inside to the outdoor patio gives access to light and views. The twin gable forms are a modern interpretation of the mountain lodge vernacular and help anchor this 5,500-square-foot home into the site.
When it comes to vacation homes, one size certainly does not fit all. For this particular family, their dream getaway was one that could be enjoyed throughout the year. Whether basking in the summer sun’s warmth or cozily nestled indoors during the winter snowfall after a day on the slopes, this vacation home was designed to be their sanctuary.
One of the standout features of this vacation house is the integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s not just about having a nice view of the surrounding natural beauty; it’s about truly immersing yourself in it.
Large, strategically placed windows and glass doors serve as portals to the outside world, allowing ample natural light to flood the interior and offering breathtaking views of the Yampa Valley.
Whether you’re sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace on a snowy winter day or enjoying a BBQ with friends and family on a warm summer evening, this design ensures you’re always connected to the environment around you.
The design of this vacation home is a modern take on the classic mountain lodge. The twin gable forms, a nod to traditional lodge architecture, not only contribute to its aesthetic appeal but also help anchor the home firmly into the site. This fusion of old and new creates a timeless and inviting atmosphere.
The limestone base and natural wood accent the black gable forms to create a contemporary aesthetic that sets the home apart from the more traditional lodges.
During the summer months, this vacation home truly comes alive. The outdoor patio becomes the heart of the family’s activities. The patio provides the ideal setting for barbecues, outdoor dining, or simply unwinding with a good book. For the more adventurous, it’s the starting point for hiking trails, biking routes, and other outdoor adventures nearby.
As winter blankets the landscape in snow, this vacation home transforms into a cozy haven. The large windows frame picturesque winter scenes, turning the snow-covered landscape into a work of art. The home sits at the base of the Steamboat Ski Resort and is within walking distance of the resort gondola.
In designing this vacation home, the focus was clear: to create a space that caters to the needs and desires of a family seeking year-round enjoyment.
By seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living, embracing the modern mountain lodge aesthetic, and providing the ideal settings for both summer fun and winter relaxation, this vacation home has become a cherished retreat.
It’s a place where lasting memories are made, where the beauty of each season is fully appreciated, and where family bonds are strengthened. This home truly embodies the essence of family, fun, and relaxation, making it the perfect escape for all seasons.
The interiors are finished with white oak floors, flat-sawn white oak cabinets, Caesarstone countertops, and wolf appliances.
What We Love: This mountain lodge-style house offers its inhabitants a spectacular getaway pad for relaxation and family fun throughout the season. We love how the project team created comfortable living spaces to enjoy on the interior during the cold winter months and fabulous outdoor spaces to entertain during the summer.
