This Shou Sugi Ban house beautifully blends into Washington’s woodlands

Citizen Design has created “The Trailblazer” a beautiful contemporary house nestled on a picturesque wooded 18-acre site in Maple Valley, Washington. The property was purchased by two brothers who each wanted their own unique homes designed for the site. The Trailblazer sits parallel to a natural creek that flows through the property.

Four rotated gabled volumes were arranged to create unique moments of connection to the outdoors and surrounding landscape. The volumes are connected through a series of light-filled breezeways that provide a connection to nature through circulation. The main entry volume houses the Living, Dining, Kitchen, and pantry.

The vaulted space of the living room and kitchen opens up to the view of the creek beyond. Just off of the living room is the outdoor living area which is covered by a mechanically adjustable louvered pergola by Struxure for year-round use.

Just off of the entry volume is the primary bedroom wing that has windows oriented towards the view and composed for privacy. On the other side of the entry volume are the family room and guest room with the children’s rooms above. The Garage wing completes the composition of volumes at the other end of the house.

The 4,600 square-foot home is clad with a combination of Shou Sugi Ban wood siding, black corrugated metal, and 2Stone concrete tiles. The homeowners requested that there be no carpet in the entire home so the main floor uses polished concrete floors with radiant heat.

The minimal palette on the interiors is composed of Bellmont 1900 series – Rift White Oak cabinets, Dekton – Liquid Shell countertops and flat sawn white oak ceilings, and 2stone concrete tiles.

The outdoor living space is connected to the main living room and the family room. The reduced volume of the family room provides a more cozy atmosphere with a free-standing wood fireplace, dark tile walls, and a pocket door that opens to the outdoors.

The flow of the home feels natural and open with serene moments of circulation.

What We Love: This house in Washington features a peaceful woodsy setting that is enhanced throughout, courtesy of large walls of glazing that seamlessly connect the indoors with nature. Living spaces are warm and inviting with clean lines and minimal details. We are especially loving the aesthetics of the exterior facade with the attractive Shou Sugi Ban wood siding.

This house will look very dated in a few years time. The kitchen looks like an office break room. Very sterile. If it’s on large acreage, why is the neighbor’s house so closely visible from the patio? The styling of this house is overly trendy and not beautiful.

I live near this house and it’s ugly from the outside but the interior is very nice
