ODS Architecture designed this impressive modern contemporary house that boasts San Francisco Bay views, situated in The Highlands neighborhood of San Mateo, California. This single-story dwelling encompasses 3,000 square feet of living space, created to capture the fabulous views from the backyard.

The homeowners wanted an outdoor courtyard that would provide shelter from the occasional high winds that are experienced from their hillside location. The house was designed around this central courtyard will the goal of highlighting the views – the owner also wanted to experience the views while at the kitchen sink.

An open-layout kitchen, dining, and living area were devised to accommodate large gatherings with family and friends. These spaces were organized in such a way that would enable the kitchen to be part of the social activities in the living room during holidays and sporting events.

The homeowner’s twin boys requested two identical bedrooms that share a Jack ‘n Jill bathroom. Other functional needs included expansive walls of glazing throughout the home, heating by a radiant hydronic underfloor system, and cooling with air conditioning utilizing concealed ductwork.
