A South Carolina Lowcountry house with sophisticated yet calming interiors

Pearce Scott Architects together with Cortney Bishop Design conceived this stunning Lowcountry house situated in the picturesque Palmetto Bluff neighborhood of Bluffton, South Carolina. Envisioned as a tranquil haven, this residence was specifically designed as a vacation home for a New York-based family of four, offering them an idyllic sanctuary to seek respite from the bustling urban landscape.

With the aim of imbuing the home with a laid-back Southern ambiance, the designer sought to create a space ideal for casual entertaining—a refreshing departure from the fast-paced lifestyle experienced by the owners in New York. Inside this four-bedroom residence, you will find a harmonious mix of classic and contemporary.

The property also includes a carriage house, which was conceived before the main residence was constructed. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Southern tobacco barn, both structures exude a timeless appeal. The building forms strike the perfect balance between old and new. The “new” is demonstrated in the open layout floor plan that is tailored to the family’s desire to entertain. While the “old” can be witnessed in the material palette.

The walls, made of shiplap with a contemporary eight-inch scale, bring a modern twist to the local style, while the home’s chimney is crafted from Tabby, a traditional Lowcountry concrete mixture composed of sand, lime, and crushed oyster shells, giving it a robust character. Adorning the front hallway is an abstract watercolor painting created by the talented Atlanta artist Sally King Benedict.

The interior incorporates various materials, such as cerused white oak for the millwork and ceiling beams, checkerboard floors made from reclaimed marble (Exquisite Surfaces) that effortlessly blend classic and contemporary elements, and kitchen cabinetry in a deep gray-green shade that sets the tone for the entire home.

The goal in designing this home was to ensure a seamless connection with the outdoors, without distractions. The designer skillfully maintained harmony between the design elements and the home’s natural surroundings. In the breakfast room, a custom fabricated walnut table and bespoke banquette allows the focus to be on the lush greenery, as witnessed through the steel windows.
