Modern yet inviting home has outstanding views of the Rocky Mountains

modern-minimalist-home-exterior

This modern yet inviting home was designed from the ground up by Studio Plow, nestled at the base of a towering 14,000-foot mountain peak in the coniferous forest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. This 3,064-square-foot residence was created to emulate the intimacy of camping while maximizing the area’s dramatic mountain views.

Inspired by a strong connection with nature, each detail of this cozy and inviting refuge was lovingly crafted as a dream home for the parents of the architect of this project. The integration of custom furniture pieces and family heirlooms into the design has created a truly bespoke, forever home. Continue below to see the rest of this spectacular dwelling…

The experience of this dwelling begins before you step foot inside, as the property features elevated views of the forested sloping valleys that eclipse the dramatic peaks of the Rocky Mountains to the West, and ancient red rock formations to the South that flank an expansive cityscape. As guests enter this modern yet inviting home, they are greeted by both a view of the hearth and a fabulous connection with the mountains.

Grain Construction was an active consultant on the project, assisting in each step of the ground-up process — from site selection, early architectural renderings, and selection of materials, to the designing and procurement of key finishes. Grain handcrafted key, custom furniture pieces including our signature door knob, the claro walnut dining room table, and the ash burl gaming room table, to name a few.

The homeowner is an avid baker who owned and ran a donut shop for two decades. Her dream was to have the ability to roll out her dough directly on the counter. Aligned with this vision, the kitchen boasts marble countertops with integrated marble shelving and appliance-ready cabinetry. The intent of the warm cabinetry and Calacatta Vagli countertops is to be functional yet elegant.

The intentionally open floor plan allows the living areas to feel incredibly connected, yet separated by multiple levels and intimate spaces. This layout creates a central fulcrum around which guests and the family can gather, dine, and relish in each other’s company – the hearth moment.

Offering an inviting warmth, key wood elements were included that carry through the entirety of the design to create a space that feels grand, yet intimate and constrained. Warm white oak floors grace the entire home in juxtaposition to its minimalist walls and ceiling. Effortlessly blending into the soft, minimal home is ambient and task-specific lighting while bold adornment moments highlight important spacial points.

While the downstairs holds the living spaces, the upstairs offers a refuge where the family gathers to work and play. Handmade furnishings include the ash and burl gaming table and the mixed leather, ochre, and wood media credenza. Theatrical velvet drapery dramatically envelopes the space to double as both an acoustic solution and a moodsetter while cleverly hiding the exercise room. In homage to a lineage of farming and quilting, a Kyle Bunting rug is the showpiece of this space.

Hiking and camping are hobbies for the owners, so their vision was to live in a home that gave them that same sense of intimacy with nature–a feeling of being nestled in the woods while having access to magnificent views.
