This getaway home soaks in tranquil views of the Blue Ridge Mountains

mountain-home-exterior

This stunning mountain modern home was designed by Vellum Architecture & Design, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. Called “Elk Mountain Ridge Residence”, this dwelling is nestled along a very popular road biking route and was designed for a bike enthusiast and his wife looking for a retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The property is quite wooded with two clear view corridors created by clearings in the trees. The plan of the house was designed to take advantage of these two primary views while nestling on the gentle slope. To minimize site disturbance and optimize views and sun the house is oriented with the contours along the long axis. This creates a long plan bookended by the primary suite and garage.

Utilizing natural materials and working with the existing topography, this beautiful home nestles quietly into its wooded environment. Strategically placed windows optimize the views and blur the division between indoors and outdoors.

The house was also carefully placed in order to preserve many of the surrounding mature trees limit soil disturbance. The house is clad in local stone and thermally-modified ash (a process of toasting the wood to improve rot resistance and durability).

On the interior of this 4,500 square foot home, warm wood tones are punctuated with the use of vast expanses of glass.

What We Love: This mountain modern home offers its inhabitants a sanctuary surrounded by woods and sweeping mountain vistas. We are loving the light-drenched living spaces, soaring ceilings, and expansive glazing that helps to blur the indoor-outdoor boundaries. Overall, we think the architects did an amazing job of creating a haven of relaxation for a couple looking for a retreat immersed in nature.

Tell Us: What details do you find most intriguing in the design of this home and what would you change? Let us know in the comments, we love reading your feedback!
