This exhilarating Vermont mountain house inspires with rugged warmth

This gorgeous mountain house was designed by Marcus Gleysteen Architects in collaboration with Sisler Builders, located in Stowe, Vermont. The dwelling rests on an alpine meadow overlooking a broad, rural valley. The design is inspired by the organic pragmatism found in sawmills, covered bridges, and other regional wood-framed structures.

A screen of slender birches, maples, and oaks conceals the house while framing glorious mountain views. Two bridges, one at the entryway and another leading to the primary suite, accommodate a stream that flows intermittently through the site. “The spectacular nature of this site, set at the head of a valley in the Green Mountains of Vermont, deserved more than a typical stylistic solution. This house is neither traditional nor modern. It simply fits its time, place, and purpose,” states Marcus Gleysteen Architects.

The exterior is a blend of crisp, shingle siding details, modern shed roofs, and interesting window massings juxtaposed with rustic timbers, stone veneer, and novelty siding elements. Adding to the dramatic appearance, the main entrance is accessed by a curved heated bridge, and the passage to the owner’s suite is through an actual covered bridge.

What We Love: This Vermont mountain house was inspired by small-scale industrial architecture found in villages throughout northern New England. Inside, the gorgeous double-sided hewn-granite fireplace brings rugged warmth to the kitchen and living room. Large windows throughout this dwelling not only flood the interiors with natural light but frame captivating views of the natural beauty that surrounds this home.
