Hacker Architects is responsible for the interior renovation of this small 1970s-era high desert home located in Black Butte, Deschutes County, Oregon. The scope of this project entailed the renovation of one of the original country house condos at Black Butte Ranch — a private resort community in the beautiful Cascade Range.
The goal of this project for the homeowner was to provide more functionality, comfort, and flexibility for a family of five. Embrace the funky, retro spirit of the original architecture, finishes, and bright color palettes. Simplify the layout so that spaces and furniture can be organized more efficiently.
This project began with tearing down the interior walls of this 1,800-square-foot dwelling to create a more spacious layout while preserving details to respect the home’s past. This included the natural pine boards on the ceiling.
This interior renovation is a tribute to the original design concept, with a vibrant, nostalgic mix of colors and textures, from the bathroom tiling to the soapstone fireplace.
Carpet and drywall were stripped away to reveal the beautiful buggy blue pine of the original structure, and multiple walls have been removed to create more voluminous spaces that let natural light and views into every room.
New built-in shelving and cabinetry is a prominent feature, minimizing the need for furniture and making efficient use of every space in the home with a relatively small footprint.
What We Love: The architects did a fabulous job of reimagining this high desert home to maximize every square inch. Designing built-in seating in the living room was a wonderful idea to enhance floor space while providing comfortable seating in front of a large picture window — the perfect spot to relax, unwind and admire the views! Overall, the surrounding landscape and framed views from the house are what make this project truly special.

Above: In the living room, the fireplace surround was redesigned with black soapstone, providing this space with a more contemporary atmosphere.
Above: When the architects began the renovation, they discovered in the original drawings that a large window in the main living space had been left out in the original construction. They decided to add this element back in during the renovation process. The built-in seating also includes integrated storage to save floor space.
