Farmer Payne Architects has designed Avalanche Chalet, a spectacular mountain modern home built into a steep hillside of Sun Valley, Idaho. This modern structure is capable of withstanding the force of an avalanche while maximizing natural light and mountain views through oversized steel doors that open the living space to the outdoor patio.
Within this magnificent two-bedroom ski chalet, progressive engineering, aesthetics, and function collide. Built into the adjacent bedrock, the cantilevered roof allow for full viewing of the surrounding areas and maximizes natural light with floor-to-ceiling glass lift and slide doors. The architects selected board-formed concrete both inside and out to create a sense of cohesion and provide multiple outdoor living spaces.

The interior was designed with a modest approach with emphasis placed on clean lines and natural materials. Nestled into the hillside and relating to the natural landscape, this architectural masterpiece offers an open living oasis for homeowners to entertain, enjoy, and embrace their mountain retreat.
What We Love: Avalanche Chalet was designed to withstand an avalanche while providing its inhabitants with a wonderful ski home for entertaining. Large walls of glazing frame spectacular views of the surrounding mountains while flooding the interiors with natural light. Clean lines and a low-maintenance material palette are idyllic for an escape in the mountains to relax and unwind. Overall, we are loving the fantastic views and the sleek steel fireplace in the living room.
