Rehkamp Larson Architects have designed this modern European cottage house in Deephaven, a community located on Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Created to last for centuries, this incredible home features a classic form with traditional materials and details that would have been used over a century ago.
This includes durable materials such as natural hand-troweled stucco, structural solid wood eave brackets, copper gutters and flashing details, cobblestone chimneys, gas lanterns, and solid wood windows. These details provide an authentic palette to ground this home and create a strong sense of place.

Two gabled structures with a courtyard between create a classic base for the design. The dwelling is sited on the east side of the property, allowing for the swimming pool to encompass the west while preserving the existing large oaks.
This home reflects the active lifestyle of the busy family with three young boys both inside and out. The residence features a blend of modern and traditional elements, plaster veneer walls, reclaimed solid timbers, and natural and organic materials with history and texture.
What We Love: This modern European cottage house is just as striking from the exterior as it is on the interior. From its gorgeous curb appeal and idyllic surroundings, one steps through the front door accented by Bevelo gas lanterns and into the most beautifully decorated living spaces. Warm and cozy throughout, we can imagine spending time with loved ones lounging on the screened porch or sitting around the fireplace in the living room.

Beautiful plaster arches lead off to the front entry, kitchen, and stair hall.
The living and dining rooms have a bank of windows framing courtyard views on one side and the screen porch towards the swimming pool on the other side.
The homeowners’ love for pattern and muted color is highlighted in the cabinetry, wallpaper, and fabrics. From overall design to the details, the formal and informal elements play off each other in a way reminiscent of old Northern European houses built to create a timeless sense of home.
The interiors of this house combine rustic and refined details. Reclaimed timbers and stained wood ceilings balance the profiled painted trim and traditional wood windows.
Aged brass faucets are paired with stone sinks, while cobblestone floors share the room with wallpaper.
