OVD 919 is spectacular residential projectย completed in 2014 by SAOTA architects, locatedย on a mountain ridgeย below Lions Heads, inย Cape Town, South Africa. The home is nestled on a steep site, featuring unparallel 360 degree viewsย of Robben Island to the North and Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles to the South. Although attaining these views was paramount to the project, they also had to be carefully balanced to achieve the necessary privacy that the homeowners required for their lifestyle. The living spaces were designed as an open concept, with a seamless indoor-outdoor connection to enhance everyday living.ย โThe architecture needed focus on creating a contemporary, uncluttered and sculptural building,โ said Tamaryn Fourie, senior associate and project team member. Building the residence on a steep slope, the architects considered a sensitive design approach,ย limitingย excavation. Secondary spaces are situated on lower levels andย two stories are positioned above the ridge, which hosts the main living spaces, pool terrace and garden and the private spaces (bedrooms) on the upper level.ย The carefully considered interiors portion of the project was carried out by Studio Parkington Design Consult.

โOn arrival at a mid-level one is lured through the main garage with its double volume and graffiti walls towards the shaft of light and splash of landscaping emanating from the glazed Entrance Area beyond. Sculptural timber clad stairs wrap themselves around a centrally positioned glass lift and take one to the upper levels of the house,โ says Philip Olmesdahl, SAOTA director and project team member. The spaces take on a gallery feel, emphasizing the draw toย this fascinating property with its jaw-dropping backdrop of mountains and sea.
โThroughout this level boundaries are blurred and thereโs a wonderful continuity between internal and external living โ itโs a house for all seasons and plays off the mood of the climate and surrounding landscape,โ said Tamaryn Fourie.
With polished concrete flooring running throughout the home and extending to the outdoors, there is the sense of a seamless flow. The bedrooms showcase timeless oak flooring for warmth and character. The master bedroom retreat is located on the top level and set back from the southern boundary to which the home shares with a national park for enhanced privacy. โAn expansive planter off the main bedroom reiterates the importance of the natural surroundings and their connection with the sea views beyond,โ noted Philip Olmesdahl.
