LDa Architects are responsible for the design of this stunning modern prairie-style house located in West Newton, Massachusetts. The new homeowners had a vision for their property, seeking a defiantly different contemporary home.

They are transplants from the midwest and wanted their home to acknowledge its New England surroundings while embracing a ‘prairie modern’ sensibility. Continue below to see the rest of this spectacular home tour…

A design language emphasizing horizontal lines and the uninterrupted flow of space connects the home to the landscape and evokes a strong modern aesthetic.

A study in subtly, we used varied shades of black to create depth on the facades — from the darkest black window frames to gunmetal siding, to charcoal porcelain tile with shimmery veining.

The home’s black exterior, broad planes of glass, and use of water in the landscape create the effect of the building receding into itself, becoming a canvas for the natural surroundings.

What We Love: This modern prairie house provides light-filled living spaces and large walls of glazing to frame the beautiful landscape. Though simple in detail, we love how the owners personalized their living spaces with colorful artwork. The white oak flooring and cabinetry help to infuse inviting warmth into this modern home. Overall, a beautiful home with our favorite detail being the vestibule that divides the main bedroom from the rest of the home.

The interior scheme is minimal yet offers plenty of warmth through layers of texture and materiality. The built-in, cabinetry and flooring are white oak or painted black, while the countertops are beautiful white quartz.

Original artwork supplied by the homeowner has been added throughout the home, offering pops of color and visual interest to each space.

On the main level, each room opens to expansive views and natural light — blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior while providing a serene and sunlit backdrop for every space.

The architects designed the owner’s suite as a separate pavilion from the main house, accessed via a glass vestibule. This provides privacy and makes the space feel like a retreat. This space features floor-to-ceiling glazing and ceramic tiles on the floor to mimic the bluestone terraces outside. The window frames a reflecting pool in the landscape.

Wow, this is nice work. Deceivingly simple, but tons of depth when you look. Kudos to the architect and interior designers.
