Hufft Projects is responsible for the renovation and addition of a dated, unassuming ranch house into a modern home for a young family located in the suburbs of Leawood, Kansas. The original home lacked the entertaining and outdoor living space that its owners desired. Updating interior living spaces along with key additions helped modernize and expand the home to better meet the needs of this growing, active family.
The dwelling was reimagined to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Interior spaces open and spill onto a three-sided courtyard that fills the void between the home’s additions. The courtyard and pool offer privacy and a sense of escape, and function as easily for small gatherings around the fire as it does for large groups of friends on the weekend.
A cantilevered canopy defines the front entrance, with wood tones that warm and balance this 5,000 square foot home’s white and black exterior.
The interior plays between light and shadow. The home is defined by spaces for socializing and spaces for seclusion, categorizing the social as ‘shadow in light’ and secluded as ‘light in shadow’. While light is dynamic throughout the house all day long, the home springs to life early in the day as the courtyard is bathed in the soft morning light.
The color palette is intentionally minimal, dominated by hues of black and white that complement the home’s beautiful, vibrant landscape. Simple architectural forms inside and out enhance the view and relationship to the outdoor space. Dark casework and a custom steel fireplace, all fabricated by Hufft, bring contrast to the bright interior spaces.
What We Love: This dated ranch house was completely transformed to offer its inhabitants light-filled living spaces and a fantastic indoor-outdoor connection. Throughout the interiors, expansive walls of glass open to enhance living spaces and create a harmonious flow. The black and white palette is clean and minimal, offering a feeling of sophistication to this updated family home. We are especially loving the main bedroom with its tranquil views of the backyard swimming pool.

The concept of light and shadow is most apparent in the owner’s suite addition. Light floods into this space through large sliding glass doors that help to bring in natural light throughout the day and soften the dark spaces at night.
