This alpine ski chalet offers an inviting getaway at the base of Mount Hood

This alpine ski chalet was designed by Keystone Architecture in collaboration with Ethan Beck Homes, is located in the picturesque alpine village of Government Camp, on the south slope of Mt. Hood, Oregon. After spending three years abroad in Amsterdam with their two young children, this family sought to build their dream cabin at the base of Mt. Hood.

This narrow three-story structure is used for low-maintenance weekend getaways for an active family. The cabin was designed with a sloping roof to handle the snow loads, just like ski chalets that are sited above the treeline. A reverse floor plan — living room and kitchen on the upper level, bedrooms in the middle, and a garage and entry on the main level — allows for unobstructed views of nearby Skibowl from the living room sofa and an abundance of natural light where the family spends most of their time.

The homeowners selected a matte black for their cabin.  The color extends into the interior in a gloss sheen on the trim, doors, and window frames. This two-bedroom cabin encompasses 2,430 square feet of living space.

What We Love: This alpine ski chalet offers a family of four a cozy retreat for enjoying outdoor activities throughout the seasons. We are loving this home’s matte black exterior and luminous interior. This home encourages gathering and staying awhile, quality time in front of the fireplace after a day on the slopes. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of creating a weekend retreat that feels like a home.

Snowbanks get so high in the winter the snow often covers the windows on the first and second floors. On the top floor, windows surround the space on all four sides. A large, stoic fireplace is balanced with a not-so-basic Ikea sectional covered in a playful, funky print designed by Casework, based on a 16th-century Dutch painting (pictured below).

Above: After sifting through paintings, Still Life with Flowers, by Jan Davidsz de Heem was the homeowner’s favorite. It was printed on a heavy-weight canvas, that was UV treated (because of all of the windows on the top floor) and stain treated. It was upholstered on a naked Ikea Sectional. Now it is a unique element that reminds the family of their time abroad.

Keywords used to drive the direction of this modern ski chalet project: alpine, funk, and gezellig — a Dutch word meaning “a relaxed atmosphere with cozy surroundings.”

To emphasize the soaring ceilings and large windows, a simple color palette of custom black, white, and whitewashed wood was incorporated, along with calculated hits of color and pattern. Through layered textures, like Moroccan rugs and printed bedding, a high contrast palette, and unconventional design elements, this ski chalet is anything but ordinary.
