Samsel Architects has designed this home rooted in traditional prairie style with modern touches nestled into the mountains of Greenville, South Carolina. The home is set in The Cliffs at Mountain Park in South Carolina the architects were presented with the challenge of creating a modern home that fits into the context of the region and conformed to the community design guidelines.
The architects took their cues from the prairie style principles but turned up the dial of modernity. This property had a gentle knoll that gave us the perfect perch. Following along the natural curve of the property, the design of the house is composed of three distinct roof forms.

The design of this home was inspired by traditional prairie style motifs โ emphasizing horizontal and geometric elements, using hipped roofs and broad overhangs.
On the exterior facade you will find three prominent hipped roof forms that give the feeling of a tree canopy over the site. The middle and largest roof form is the main stack that holds the main living spaces โ kitchen and living room. Private spaces, the ownerโs suite and guest rooms bookend either side of the gathering spaces.
The new owners were relocating from Chicago to the Carolinas, in what was to be their retirement home. They have pets and adult children, and requested for their home to be contemporary but livable.
What We Love: This gorgeous home in the South Carolina mountains features a neutral color palette so as not to detract from the massive window walls and views beyond. The great room encompasses the kitchen, dining and living spaces. A prominent feature in this space is the dual fireplaces at the entry threshold. Instead of a traditional fireplace/TV combination in the living room, the dual fireplaces in the dining are used to create an anchoring focal point in the room.
Beautifully appointed living spaces flow harmoniously from one to the next. The interior designers selected durable fabrics and finishes, including Crypton stain resistant fabrics to ensure the owners could enjoy their living space with their family and pets.
This light-filled living room features generous windows with views to the surrounding forest.
Natural toned white oak floors and walnut features such as the custom designed kitchen island infuse warmth to the living spaces.
This custom designed floating steel staircase keeps the space transparent enabling light to filter from the main level windows into the lower level living spaces.
A vertically based light fixture helps to emphasize the height of the staircase. The lower level houses guest bedrooms, a secondary living space and a screened porch along with a mother-in-law suite with simple access to an elevator.
This home was designed to enjoy everything the mountain lifestyle has to offer, including outdoor living spaces that connects owners and guests to nature.
