This Canadian lake house was designed by Paul Bernier Architect, located on the pristine shores of Lac Charlebois, a lake in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec. Nestled on a woodsy property, this bright and airy dwelling was devised to embrace its natural surroundings.
The owners requested that most of their living spaces be level with the land, which is on a slight slope. During a first visit to the site, a perimeter was established to identify the ideal location. The privileged view towards the lake and the south coincide, guiding the orientation of this 2,700 square foot structure.
The house was designed in an L-Shape plan: one wing encompasses the main living spaces — kitchen, dining room, living room, while the other wing houses the more private spaces — master bedroom, bathroom, laundry room. This type of layout allows for all spaces to be oriented towards the south and towards the desired view. The proximity of the windows is constant.
The L-shaped plan also makes it possible to define a sunny outdoor space, hidden from the view of neighboring homes and open to the lake. In the hollow of the L, a mosquito net has been fitted to take advantage of summer evenings.
Where the two wings of the L meet, the architects created a volume on two floors. The ground floor encompasses the garage and upstairs you will find a guest bedroom and an office, which enjoys a strategic position overlooking the lake and with a view below on the ground floor.
On the outside, this two-story volume is clearly distinguished from the L-shaped plan by its materiality. It is clad in Corten steel (self-weathering steel) which has already taken on its orange color, while the L-shaped volume on one level is clad in black stained cedar.
