A striking Washington coast refuge inspired by local agricultural traditions

Ore Studios is responsible for the design of this spectacular Washington coast refuge for a couple of empty nesters based in the city of Seattle. Perched on fifty feet of medium bank waterfront, this weekend retreat enjoys enviable views of Skagit Bay and Whidbey Island. The architects used the agricultural vernacular of the surrounding valley to inform a classic gabled form that projects towards the water.

Serving as a multi-generational retreat, the main volume holds the public rooms as well as a kitchen tucked into one side. An attached two-story block holds three bedrooms, three bathrooms, along with an abundance of storage space. With bedrooms on both floors, the 2,500 square foot structure was designed for aging in place.

With the general design established, Ore Studios collaborated with Mt. Vernon-based Theisen Architects to coordinate construction documents and engineering. In addition to the architectural design, they selected materials, fixtures, and furnishings for the home, hewing closely to the homeowner’s desire for a relaxed and simple palette.

Strong off-white walls, millwork, and tile are balanced by blackened architectural elements such as window sashes, the stone hearth, and custom collar ties in the great room. Furnishings are relaxed but unexpected, with vintage, custom, and European pieces comfortably commingling.
