Black Corley Owens + Hughes Architects is responsible for the design of this rustic barn house as a family retreat, located in Paron, Arkansas. This cabin was created for Little Rock residents, as a retreat for their family. The couple found an old Dutch barn frame from upstate New York that had been originally built in 1752.
The frame was measured, recorded, disassembled, and reconstructed to provide the “skeleton” for the cabin. The original mortise and tenon joinery of the barn frame was preserved as a beautiful testament to the strength and ingenuity of the early American craftsmen who built these structures.
During construction, the architect counted over 350 rings on one of the main beams in the Living Room. Consequently, if the timber was 350 years old in 1752…it started growing almost 100 years before Columbus visited North America.
What We Love: This project showcases the beautiful transformation of an old dutch barn into a retreat for relaxing family vacations. Surrounded by a tranquil rural setting, this home has plenty of privacy along with wonderful forested views through large windows in the voluminous great room. Overall, we are loving the unique design features found throughout this home. It is the perfect respite for family gathering and entertaining in the Arkansas countryside.
