Mid-century modern house gets inspiring transformation in Austin, Texas

Architects Clayton & Little have beautifully renovated this mid-century modern house sited around a spectacular live oak tree in the heart of Austin, Texas. Originally designed by architect Roland Roessner, a noted University of Texas professor and architect of modern-style homes, this 1950s dwelling is known for its prominently cantilevered concrete balcony perched above a long, sloping hillside, with Camp Mabry as its backyard.

Though previously unacquainted with the period, the new owners delved into all things mid-century modern. The scope of this project entailed new brickwork, mahogany paneling, and a brand new guest casita. The project team had a mission to bring the home into the 21st century while maintaining the classic architectural details of this home’s original design.

Project Team: Architecture: Clayton & Little | Interior Design: Ashby Collective | Landscape Architect: Word and Carr | Contractor: Burnish & Plumb | Kitchen Design: Kitchen for Cooks | Structural Engineer: Duffy Engineering

The architects sought to retain the home’s original character while adding square footage, updating finishes and improving energy efficiency. Certain rooms were reconfigured, while others were left intact. The entrance to the home was modified. Brick walls were added to form an open-air garden, which establishes a more formal entry sequence.

The finished renovation is 2,680 square feet and includes a one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath main house, and a two-bedroom guest house.

In the family room and living room, clerestory windows were addedโ€”a feature that was part of Roessner’s original design.

What We Love: This mid-century modern house offers luminous living spaces with a fresh, modernized update for this home’s inhabitants. A striking exterior facade is warm and welcoming thanks to the natural environment that surrounds it, most notably the massive live oak tree. Brick walls and wood paneling adds an authentic feel to the interior spaces while adding an inviting warmth. Overall, we think the project team did a fabulous job of transforming this home into a haven of mid-century design.

To improve the home’s energy performance, the team retrofitted the building envelope by installing new insulation and double-glazed windows. Photovoltaic panels were added above the carport and guesthouse.

New elements in the kitchen include honed-quartzite countertops, white cabinetry, and cork flooring. Original features such as wood paneling and a pass-through window between the kitchen and dining room were retained.

The addition of an office and utility room to the north and guest rooms to the south were purposefully set back from the original house and are minimally discernible from the street.
