Hoedemaker Pfeiffer was enlisted to design this rustic camp-like retreat, set in Freeland on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, north of Seattle, Washington. This project demonstrates what happens when you focus on your strengths, defy convention, and take a few risks. The demolition of half the house made room for a camp-like setting with grand indoor spaces for gathering.
Step outside into the great outdoors, and you will find vast spaces to soak up the sunshine and views, or spend an evening gathering around the fire pit. Bedrooms were replaced by a collection of wall tents that lose nothing in luxury and gain everything in connection to the great outdoors.

A Bold Island Retreat Unlike Any Other
Although the original house’s bedrooms, bath, laundry, mudroom, and garage were demolished, parts of the main house were preserved to preserve the spirit of the original beach cabin. What remained was transformed into a series of grand gathering spaces, a rustic great room with soaring ceilings, a camp-style kitchen, and a dining room designed for enjoying meals with family and friends. Every interior detail nods to the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest, from the exposed timber and raw wood accents to the earthy, nature-inspired palette throughout.

Rustic Interiors Designed for Gathering
Inside, the great room is the heart of the retreat, a generous, welcoming space with rustic character and a warm, lodge-like atmosphere that invites guests to linger. The kitchen features camp-inspired cabinetry and earthy finishes that feel perfectly at home in this island setting.

The Ultimate Glamping Experience: Luxury Wall Tents
This Whidbey Island retreat comes complete with bedroom tents, the ultimate in indoor-outdoor living. Each tent is fully furnished and appointed with all the comforts you would expect from a high-end retreat, giving guests the feeling of sleeping under the stars without sacrificing a single luxury. It is the definition of glamping, and one of the most creative sleeping arrangements we have ever seen in a residential project.
