Romantic stone cottage retreat nestled on Hunting Island, Maine

This stone cottage retreat was designed and built by Knickerbocker Group, located on Hunting Island, just off the coast of Portland, Maine. Nestled on the rocky shores of a one-acre island, this cottage bravely faces the open Atlantic Ocean. This cottage was originally a hunting retreat devoid of electricity, encompassing a couple of small rooms, rustic plumbing and remnants from ocean debris washed in through windows during winter ocean storms.

When working on this project, the architects faced challenges of permitting regulations, exposure, and not wishing to lose the essence of the island. This set the stage for a brilliant collaboration with the new owners whose desire was to bring 21st-century upgrades for convenience and comfort. A modest addition enabled for a more spacious layout while retaining the elements of the original structure.

With the cottage nestled so close to the water’s edge, careful attention was given to ensure the structure would be able to withstand the ocean’s fury while inviting gentle summer breezes and the ‘music’ of an ocean setting.

What We Love: This stone cottage retreat offers a warm and cozy atmosphere for its inhabitants to spend time with family and friends. Perched on the rocks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this is an idyllic place to relax and unwind from city living. With the craziness going on in the world right now, we would love to shack up in this secluded place for a couple of months, how about you?

Tell Us: What details in this cottage do you find most appealing? Would this be your ideal place to enjoy vacation time on this remote island? Please share your thoughts in the Comments below!

With a desire for guest quarters separate from the original stone cottage, the ‘bunk house’ footprint was determined by the only available area allowed by setback regulations. Finished in an earthy palette with a punch of sky blue, the architectural detailing of the bunkhouse mimics that of the main cottage but with a contemporary flair. At the end of the season, customized bullet-proof storm panels protect the island cottages from the ocean’s winter fury.
