Whitten Architects designed this beautiful contemporary beach cottage for a couple who loves to entertain, located at the mouth of a river in Biddeford, Maine. The scope of this renovation project involved retaining as much of the existing home as possible. This entailed working within the confines of the existing layout, footprint and foundation. Spaces were designed to be flexible for the homeowners, enabling them to comfortably hold varying-sized gatherings. An additional design goal was to separate public entertainment and gathering spaces from private spaces.

An open first-floor plan features a well-connected kitchen, dining, and living areas. A large music room with a grand piano alcove features French doors at both the waterside deck and south-facing terrace that allow the room to open up to the outdoors on idyllic summer days. The architects selected high-performance, durable materials including Eastern white cedar shingles, a copper roof on the music room, spray-foam insulation, and red cedar wood trim.
