This beautiful seaside cottage was completely transformed by architect Bryant Alsop, located in Shoreham, a seaside town south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The homeowners had purchased this 1920s cottage in total disrepair, with the desire to transform this home into a weekend retreat for themselves and their adult children. The architects not only renovated the existing cottage, but also included a contemporary addition to meet the lifestyle needs of its inhabitants.
The newly completed cottage features a wonderful, eclectic aesthetic, where reclaimed and industrial furnishings creates a welcoming atmosphere. The original character was retained, while the Australian bush setting was maximized from every angle throughout this cottage.
“The floor plan zones the guest bedrooms and sitting room in the original cottage, while three pitched ‘pods’ step down the sloping site and contain Kitchen, Living and Master Bedroom,” states the architects. This project faced many challenges, which includes linking the old with the new, working with the slope of the property, zoning private and guest accommodation, and maximizing the outlook and natural light despite the south-facing site.
What We Love: This wonderful seaside cottage offers its inhabitants a comfortable and inviting family retreat to enjoy for years to come. From the sleek kitchen to the sunken living room, there are plenty of eye-catching details throughout this home that showcases the beautiful work the architects did on this renovation project. We are also loving the wrap around balcony space, inviting indoor-outdoor living.
