Designed by Knock Architecture and Design this brand new, two-story midcentury-inspired home is located in the eclectic Trestle Glen neighborhood of Oakland, California. The property was a challenge to develop on, as it is a steep, down-sloping lot. The couple who purchased this site were looking to upsize from their loft, wishing to have more space for their growing family. The architects devised a plan that was inspired by midcentury modern details, with an open and flowing floorplan. The goal was to keep this 2,300 square foot home low on the site and as compact as possible.

It was going to be expensive to build on this sloping site, so it was the architects mission to minimize the site work by reducing the number of expensive pier and grade beam footings. Instead the architectural design is comprised of simple volumes and footprints. The finished result features a floorplan with bedrooms on grade with the entry, while the lower level features the open and airy main living spaces. The great room extends out to a deck and compact yard with a vegetable garden.
What We Love: This midcentury-inspired home offers a bright and airy living space for its compact design. Concrete flooring mixed with wood details, provides a visually interesting juxtaposition of materials. Set on a small lot, the architects did a fantastic job of offering privacy from the surrounding neighbors while still maintaining views and a beautiful landscape design. Loving the open plan on the lower level, full of harmony and light, blurring lines between indoors and out.

Above: Although the overall spirit is midcentury, there are some modern touches throughout. This includes the dramatic Calacatta Viola marble kitchen island and coffee table, both designed by the architect. Etched black glass cabinets frame the wall, complimented by open wood shelves. The neolith basalt countertops highlight the island and perimeter cabinets.
