Fascinating industrial style loft apartment renovation in Portland

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design brings to us this fabulous loft apartment renovation project, located on one of the most interesting streets in Portland, Oregon. The loft is located in the recently transformed Pearl District, in an old industrial building that was originally a warehouse and manufacturing facility. The structure was converted into condos in the 1990s. This particular unit was divided up so that a long, narrow hallway would be the first point of entry. Prior to the renovation, this home offered limited storage and aesthetically unpleasing color palette, consisting of red, green and blue along with a yellowish bamboo.

The loft was very compact, offering just 870 square feet of living space. The homeowners requested that the design team create a floorplan with an open and airy feeling, with plenty of customized storage, space to entertain large groups, and a warm and sophisticated color palette.

In response, the designers devised a layout where the corridor is eliminated and the experience upon entering the space is open, inviting, and more functional for cooking and entertaining.

The designers created visual interest and contrast by painting the walls a soft yet luminous shade of white, while the ceiling beams were stained in a dark, earthy grey. An array of textiles was used to decorate this loft, including: a hand-stitched felt headboard, a vintage Moroccan rug and heavy woven fabrics used to upholster the custom sofa and cushions. A series of hand blown glass pendant lights swag playfully over the sofa.

“One of the homeowner’s requests was to find a good home for “Megatron” their big screen television, a member of the family with a personality of his own,” states the designer.  A console table was custom designed for the space and mounted on the wall. The console features antique Chinese doors, wrapped in a shiny modern lacquered box. The large scale of the console visually anchors the television while providing space for accessories and concealing components.

Great design! I would love the open feeling from a loft. Just one little issue. Why put a plant in front of the TV? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a large screen?
