We featured a stunning midcentury Colonial style home about a year ago, designed by the very talented Marie Flanigan Interiors. Get the full home tour here. Located in the River Oaks neighborhood of Houston, Texas, this home also included a fabulous guest house. We touched upon it in the previous feature, but today we decided this home was so inspiring that would should give you the full tour.
This cottage style guest house is full of stylishly appointed furnishings, fixtures and finishes. The space encompasses its own living room, dining room and kitchen. There is also a guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom, powder bathroom and mudroom. The design scheme of this guest house has been given a more modern appeal than that of the main house. However it does still mirror the main residence in its clean yet layered aesthetic.
A layering of textures adds visual interest throughout. The designer selected a neutral palette of white mixed with hints of soft beiges, browns and blues. She tied it together with sizable rough-hewn beams on the ceiling of the great room. The furnishings in the living/dining spaces reflects a contemporary, organic, curvaceous and even sculptural appeal—as described by the designer.
Its a visually beautiful mix of mismatched furnishings that offers a comfortable and inviting living space for guests to enjoy. Quite simply, the home is a “smaller, fresher and whiter version of the main house—staying true to the original structure,” states Flanigan.
What We Love: This cottage style guest house features subtle, surprising details throughout the interiors that will delight your senses. It is quite charming how this home is tucked quietly in the backyard on the other side of the pool, offering inviting views. We think any guest invited to come spend that weekend at this home will never want to leave!… Readers, what do you think?

Above: The dining room features soft white linen fabric-wrapped dining chairs, complimented by a gray-hued tufted linen bench. A wood table is finished with iron legs, adding a touch of rusticity to the space. In fact, the designer’s use of metal accents, most notably iron can be seen throughout. Notice the iron used in the drum pendant shades above the table?
Above: In the kitchen, oak cabinets are complimented by a classic white Calcutta marble countertop and backsplash. Notice the antiqued-nickel recessed campaign handles on the drawers?
