This playful townhouse was designed to meet the lifestyle needs of an active family with three young children by Feldman Architecture, located in San Francisco, California. Comprised of 4,188 square feet of living space, the interior design scheme of this home was centered on a “work hard, play hard” approach to life. The clients requested sun-drenched, open spaces that their children and family friends could enjoy now and for years to come. Warm and welcoming, the spaces have been arranged to be continuously visible so the children could have the freedom to run around while the parents could always be within earshot. The front facade of the home represents a traditional townhouse design, melding with the surrounding neighborhood, but suggesting a modern interior through scale and material selection. The main level is comprised of an open plan kitchen, dining and living area. The kitchen ceiling is open to two levels above it, filtering light through the spaces. Functional storage solutions such nooks keeps clutter at bay in the main living spaces. The living room features disappearing glass panels that creates a seamless connection to an outdoor deck and lush backyard play area.
A dramatic focal point to the home is a central metal screened staircase that runs from the entry level all the way up to the top level. Behind the staircase is a tiled feature wall, reflecting light through the stairwell. On the upper level, a catwalk connects the bedrooms, encircling the atrium. A diagonal stair over the atrium takes you up to a floating office “pod” and a rooftop deck. The office pod is a sound proof space to allow the homeowner a peaceful escape to work. The rooftop deck is surrounded by a green roof, overlooking spectacular city views.

What We Love: The bright open spaces and the suspended swing in the kitchen looks like it would be super fun…but the coolest idea is the office pod, the perfect space to retreat from a noisy household when you require some needed alone time!
