This modern-rustic homestead was designed by architectural studio JLF + Associates for a young family of five, located in Jackson, Wyoming. The sloping property consists of 35 acres atop Gros Ventre West and surrounded by mature growth aspen trees. The design team wanted the home to appear as though it is growing out of the landscape. The residence consists of a series of structures that steps down the hillside.
At the heart of the structure is the entryway, with an inviting wood trussed porch. To the left of the entryway is a guesthouse, garage and equipment shed, all built into the hillside. A green roof of sage and wild grasses covers the guesthouse. To the right of the entryway is a stone structure that encompasses the kitchen and living room. Beyond that structure is the private bedroom wing, a small log cabin with a timeless aesthetic.

Interesting Fact: This contemporary homestead was awarded “Home of the Year 2016” by Mountain Living magazine— “The epitome of high country architecture”.
“A hybrid of urban and Western influences, the house pairs ageless materials—timber, stone and Corten steel—with luminous contemporary elements,” explains the architects. “Perched atop a Teton butte, the homestead feels synonymous with place, yet surprisingly refined.” Board-and-batten-style exterior siding is combined with industrial Cor-Ten rusted steel and steel beams.

Throughout the interiors, a beautiful mix of stone, hand-hewn beams, glass and steel creates a brilliant aesthetic.
The interior decor showcases mid-century furnishings that are more open and exposed with minimal cushions. The designers wished to counterbalance this lightness by pairing these pieces with some heavier furnishings. Material elements includes weathered Montana moss rock and rustic reclaimed wood. The exquisite wood flooring consists of rare American chestnut. Efficient steel and glass windows frames the breathtaking views that surrounds the home.
Above: The living room features a wood burning fireplace. On the ceiling, exposed steel trusses and purlins are combined with reclaimed wood rafters and ceiling boards.

Above: In the living room, a custom designed game table can expand to host eight guests for a dinner party. There is no formal dining area, as this home caters to the homeowner’s contemporary lifestyle. Instead, there are several more intimate dining areas, which includes a small banquette in the kitchen, an adjacent outdoor dining table and the table featured in the image above.
Above: The kitchen pushes the rustic-modern aesthetic with the selection of opaque white glass for the custom designed frameless cabinetry. Above the island is the branching light fixture by Lindsey Adelman.
Above: The master bathroom was designed to frame views of the Teton mountain range. In doing so, the homeowners traded large mirrors for a wall of windows set on the counter without a backsplash. What a beautiful start to the day!
